Feast Day April 11
Patron of students, pharmacists, back pain, loss of parents.
St. Gemma Galgani is an Italian mystic. Gemma was born near Lucca, Italy in the late 19th century and was canonized in 1940. Gemma loved prayer from an early age and always sought closeness with the Lord. At the age of 19 she received the stigmata which would last for three days each week. Because of her profound imitation of the Passion of Christ she has been called the "daughter of the Passion". She is especially venerated in the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus. Gemma predicted that the Passionists would establish a monastery at Lucca; this came to pass two years after her death. Today, Gemma's relics remain at the Passionist monastery in Lucca. Gemma died at the age of 25 on Holy Saturday from tuberculosis. The Parish Priest who was with her said, "She died with a smile which remained upon her lips, so that I could not convince myself that she was really dead."
Saint Gemma Galgani is the patron of students, pharmacists, back pain, loss of parents.
